RHE media photography

RHE Media’s overarching mission is to enhance wellbeing and our mission statement is

Adding Years to Your Life and Life to Your Years

Hobbies and leisure activities boost wellbeing in many different ways. According to research done by the New Economics Foundation there are five main ways to wellbeing: http://issuu.com/neweconomicsfoundation/docs/five_ways_to_well-being?e=0/1034984
Photography is a very popular hobby and research shows that it is a perfect way to all five aspects of wellbeing:

Connect – social relationships are critical for promoting wellbeing so taking up photography as a hobby, joining a camera club, sharing your photographs with family, friends and using social media like Pinterest and Flickr, taking part in competitions and so forth are all great ways to maintain existing relationships and to create new ones.

Be Active - Exercise is essential for fitness, for slowing age-related cognitive decline and for generally adding years to your life. Photography provides many opportunities to get outside in the fresh air and take exercise.

Take Notice - Studies have shown that being aware of what is taking place in the present directly enhances your wellbeing and savouring ‘the moment’ can help to reaffirm your life priorities. Photography is all about taking notice and capturing the moment.

Learn - Continued learning through life enhances self-esteem and encourages social interaction and a more active life. Taking up photography as a hobby provides great opportunities for learning. Our photography titles are designed to provide inspiration and to promote active learning. Children can also learn a great deal from photography and it is a fun activity to share with young people.

Give - Research into actions for promoting happiness has shown that committing an act of kindness once a week over a six-week period is associated with an increase in wellbeing. There are many case studies that show how photography can be used to give something back to the community. Photography is now an integral part of a great many social and community projects and can therefore be seen as an act of giving in many instances. Also, on a very basic level, sharing photographs with family and friends gives great pleasure to both the photographer and the recipient.

Photography can therefore add years to your life and life to your years. We hope our Photography titles will encourage you to explore all five ways to wellbeing in an enjoyable and informative manner. Visit the series pages on this website for more information about our

about our series editor - tony worobiec

We are delighted that Tony Worobiec is our Series Editor for the PhotoActive and PhotoWise series. Tony studied Fine Art at The University of Newcastle upon Tyne and spent 18 years as head of a large design faculty in Dorset. He has won awards for photography in the UK and internationally, and has had work exhibited in London’s Barbican Gallery, The Independent Photographers Gallery, The Fox Talbot Museum and Bradford’s National Museum of Photography. His work is in the permanent collections of The Royal Photographic Society and The Fox Talbot Museum.
Tony regularly writes articles for photographic magazines both here in the UK and America.  He is the author of 14 books the latest of which The Complete Guide to Photographic Composition has just been published.   Nearly 200,000 copies of his books have been sold worldwide and have been translated into Dutch, German, Spanish, Taiwanese, Mandarin, Russian and, rather fittingly, Polish.
Possibly his most prestigious project to date is one he did with his wife Eva, which resulted in Ghosts in the Wilderness; Abandoned America. This iconic book is often quoted by colleges and universities as the definitive documentary on the abandoned communities of the American High Plains. Published in 2003, it was very enthusiastically reviewed in the Guardian, the Independent, the Washington Post and Stern magazine in Germany.
